I’ve never gotten much into commenting on other blogs for traffic. I’ve messed around with it here and there but it’s very time intensive and for me was never worth the results.
That being said, I just saw this cool little tool mentioned on Michelle Machpherson‘s blog that will give you a big advantage in the blog commenting for traffic game…
Basically you can put blogs from your niche on a notify list and any time those blogs get a new piece of content, you’ll get notified immediately.
As Michelle notes, it’s not like an RSS reader that can take hours and hours to update, it literally tells you as soon as the new post has been made to that blog.
What’s the benefit of this?
If you’re the first person to comment on a popular post, your comment has to be scrolled past by everyone else who reads and intends to comment. This means more traffic for you – and MUCH more traffic than if you are the 15th commenter – pretty cool I reckon.
Of course you don’t want to spam with it and you always want to leave quality comments or no one will visit your link anyway but like I said, this might be a handy tool if you’re looking for a few extra targeted visitors.
I’m telling you about this right as I hear about it so I’ll be testing out starting now as well.

I got more or less the same result using Google Desktop’s Web Clips. I entered the rss feed for my favorite blog and get notified whenever there’s new post.
I usually got to the top of comment list without problem using this method.

Like I mentioned the only difference is the instantaneous-ness of the notification – quite often for popular blogs, by the time the RSS feed has updated, a bunch of comments have already been made.
This gives you the notification instantly. Let me know how it goes for you.

Duncan Carver released something similar a while back called BlogSniper, does the same thing and I’ve found it quite useful..
Michelle’s stuff does tend to be good as well though.

had just got back from a leisurely sunday lunch in the pub with a friend and just saw Michelle’s name mentioned, not Duncan’s.
I get it Andrew. I’ve seen about 4 of these types of software now, each one with one more twist. But it’s a twist that I like..since I had to scroll past Matt and Franck on my way here (:0).
