If you follow my methods or many other SEO methods, you’ll likely have built many links to your site from places like article directories, squidoo lens’ and hubs, or even the Firepow Blog Network if you’re a member. In other words, from places where you get to choose your anchor text and so of course you make it one of the keywords you’re trying to target.
This is a great strategy; one that I’ve used ever since getting started online 5 years ago. Only trouble is…
In the overall link analysis, when Google studies your site and see that such a high percentage of your links have similar anchor text that is so targetted, it begins to look unnatural. Afterall, if you WEREN’T a search marketer, would your site have links that looked like that from people naturally linking to you? Nope!
So to make things look more natural you need some other links that don’t link to you with a particular anchor text so that your overall link picture doesn’t look so fake.
Of course in the perfect world you’d use alot of different methods to get more links to your site that don’t have that same anchor text but if you’re in a rush, there’s one quick way to do so.
I’ve never been a big proponent of directory submissions because I think their benefit and ability to really affect your rankings died a few years ago.
But for people like us, having a couple of hundred links come back to our site without the same anchor keyword phrases, can take our percentage of in links with those same familiar anchors from 80% to 8% of your total incoming link volume.
Does 8% look more natural? Yes.
Will it save your site from raising a red flag in Google? It certainly could.
Will it help your site overall? A couple hundred extra links? It surely can’t hurt (assuming the directories are all quality ones).
If you do have a high percentage of your links coming from the same few anchor keywords a directory submission could be a big help. I use this one below because there’s minimal work involved and you can get manual submission to a large number of directories for a good price.

I agree with you completely. I actually did a case study where I showed that I was able to get an almost empty blog to PR2 using only PR0 directory links. (It was an accident). Anyway, I agree that a mix makes it much more reasonable.
Good advice. Have you adjusted to the cold yet?
