Learning From Google Webmaster Tools Part 2

This is the second post in the series on what you can learn about your site from Google’s Webmaster Tools.

If you missed part 1 of this series, you know where to click.

This is another simple thing, but important and less often talked about than the BIG things like building links and content.

Today we’ll look at…

How crawlable your site is by the search engines.

We know that the way your site gets listed in the search engines is by the Google robots coming along and scanning your site.

They learn many things as they crawl, like about your internal link structure, the number of pages on your site, where your site is linked to and from…

But also, they make judgements about how high quality your site is based on other factors…

One of these is, how easy the site is to crawl.

This is from the main overview of Stats inside GWMT:

All the things you see on that list are things Google doesn’t want to see on your site.

Particularly with your WP blogs, it’s common that there are strange or random links left on your template by theme designers that forgot to fix them up.

Linking from random places in your template to WP login pages that can’t be crawled is a common one.

These can also occur if you delete posts from your site or change your permalink structure after you’re blog’s already been indexed.

Having crosses in this area can mean a little frown from the big G, AND if you’re an every day blog owner like me, you’ll probably never know they exist without GWMT.

This quick check will let you make the adjustments you need to so that the Google Robots have an enjoyable time frolicking across your website.

We’ll keep looking at other improvements GWMT can help you make to your website in the coming posts of this series.
