Forgotten Link Building Technique

You know those times where you read something that you already knew, but weren’t doing, and you slap yourself in the head and call yourself an idiot before remembering that you’re talking to your self and you sound like a loser?

… Ok maybe that’s just me but…

It was such a moment that inspired this post…

Here’s the easiest possible way to increase backlinks…

Say you have a post whose ranking you want to increase in the search engines for keyword X…

All you do is go through your other posts and link to that post with the anchor text X…

You can do it as many times as you want and give your desired post as many new links as you want!

It’s called… *drumroll*

INTERNAL LINKING!

One of the first [tag]SEO[/tag] lessons you learn but one that I know I personally was TOTALLY neglecting.

If you’d been neglecting it too you might want to go back to some of your old blog posts or site pages and start using it…

Then go pack all your toys away and get into bed – mummy will be there to tuck you in soon

  1. Are you going to go over site structure Andrew? What difference it makes when we use Wordpress? Are silo structures a good idea?

    :-)

  2. I highly recommend using a TAG cloud the more tags with the same name the bigger the font for that name gets in the TAG cloud.

Most IT news sites uses these.

  3. Alex,

Yes, we might look at them in the next couple of weeks.

    Myles,

Yup, Tag clouds will work. Only difference is, more weight is given in the search engines, to a link that’s located in the midst of relevant content, ie in a post, than one that’s located in a sidebar.

  4. Regarding silo structures and Wordpress – I recently read a post on another blog that recommended setting up your pemalinks as “category-name/post-name” and then using a plugin to create an index page for each category (as in blog.com/category-name). It seemed like a bunch of extra work to me -especially if you have a lot of categories or add categories regularly.

I found another solution at urbangiraffe.com. His “advanced permalinks” allows you to drop the “category” designator from the category pages (in other words, your category page will no longer say blog.com/category/category-name, but rather just blog.com/category-name. Viola, instant index page.
