Check These Search Engine Results

This last couple of weeks I’ve been doing up a little sample campaign to show what our new Plug and Play Niche Cash can do and I came across a fascinating and potentially very powerful little SEO finding that I thought I’d share.

So the campaign went something like this…

I created a blog with 2 main posts.

Each post was targeted to a keyword of it’s own.

I was trying to get those 2 blog posts ranking for those keywords.

My link building went something like this…

I built many links to each of the posts with the anchor text of their main keyword including links from other blogs, links from article submissions, and so on. Of all the links obtained, probably 80% were coming back to those blog posts with those same keywords as anchor text. There was some serious link juice flowing too, as a number of those links were from PR5′s, PR3′s and more.

There was also a few links from article submissions where I linked to the root domain, with the anchor text just http://thedomain.com. So no keyword in the anchor text and only 3 links in total going to the URL of the actual root domain.

Now get this…

The first result that I get in the search engines is that my ROOT DOMAIN… not the post pages… shows up as ranking (still deep down, like 5 pages back) for BOTH of the keywords I was originally targeting INSTEAD of the post pages I was actually using to target those keywords!

In other words, for example:

URL 1, which looked like http://thedomain.com/keyword-title-whatever

had probably 10 links from many quality sites, PR5′s, PR3′s, ALL using that keyword as the anchor text.

URL 2, which was the root domain http://thedomain.com

had 3 links, from one article directory, 0 PR on the actual pages the links were from and NONE of them with anchor text being that keyword…

And URL 2 showed up in the SERPS for that keyword FIRST, and URL 1 is still no where to be found!!

Are you getting the significance of that?

The domain on it’s own was able to get into the SERPS with relatively NO links, and NO proper on page optimization… Why does Google love root domains so much?

I know that eventually with continued building, my post pages will take over for their targeted keywords, but for those of you looking for the FASTEST rankings (which I know you all are), this means something very important.

Usually I avoid building too hard to my blog’s home page because I don’t want it getting much traffic – a blog’s home page is terrible for conversions, too much going on, too many links, too many options etc.

But these results suggest that you might like to try (at least at the beginning) sticking up a static home page and building links to your blog’s home page using the anchor text of a main keyword you’d like to rank for. You can/should still do what I’d normally recommend which is to create an individual blog post on every keyword you want to rank for (even the keyword you’re also now targeting on the home page so you can eventually obtain double listings on page 1) and build links to those posts (they will convert the highest), the only difference being you’ll throw your home page into the mix with it’s own unique keyword too.

Give it a shot and see how the speed of your rankings/traffic/sales on a new site improves.

    Hi Andrew,

I am quite interested in PnP niche cash.

    However, I am just wondering.

There are only 1 google top spot
and you are accepting 500 members.

So, would that means you have to
compete with 499 other people for
    the top ranking.

    Perhaps you can address this
in your next video for PnP?

    Thanks,
    Huiyuan

  2. That’s interesting! Time to test that tactic.

  3. Hellp Andrew

I am very interested in the PnP2 system – as i am sure a lot of people are!

I am quite experienced in general in IM but have very little time to do the research and actual building of sites. So PnP2 sounds great to my ears.

Just to expand a little on the first comment, will that further video also mention how you will deal with the little itsy-bitsy issue of duplicate content!!

  4. Hi Andrew, great post, I never really thought about a blog’s home page being too busy, but now you pointed out I can see what you mean.

    Sally :)

  5. This definitely works. By the way I’m a member of NbI and I did a take off on one of your recommended niches using a product name as my keyword. I am currently 1st page position 6 which isn’t too bad considering Amazon has 2 of the other 5 spots

.It started on page 3 and after 3 weeks hit front page. But here’s the crazy part. I have no links at all and only 1 page and most of the content was pasted from product information

The only explanation is that Google loves targeted domain names. This is not the first time this has happened either. So now I dont even consider building a site if I cant get a good keyword domain name

  6. Hi Andrew,
This is definitely very interesting info and thanks for sharing the results of your experiments. I’m looking forward to seeing PnP.

Once one has the key worded domain name, how long should one wait to check to see where it is showing up? Next, how long should one wait to start building links back to the main page?

  7. Interesting, makes me wonder about the way I’m doing things and how these tips could make a difference…

  8. Most of the time the reason behind the phenomenon you describe in the post is that the content in you posts ALSO appears on your home page at the root domain (that is mostly how blogs work). Because the domain home almost always has more authority (in the eyes of Google) than any post page, then it will rank for the keyword content of the posts rather than the post itself at least initially.

Often times, however, especially if you build some links to the post pages, this means you will probably get a double listing for the content (the domain home page and the post page). The order of the listing reflects the relative authority of the particular page in the eyes of Google.

    • Thanks for your input Bob. On that issue, personally for all blog posts I usually use the “more tag” so the home page doesn’t have the same content on it as my post pages and the post pages have the full post and so are unique.

But the factor not mentioned in this post is that all the links that are built to the post pages must also increase spider activity and PR flow to the home page as well (since every post page links to the home page) hence increasing it’s authority… even though the same applies vice versa (links built to the home page pass PR to the post pages), this must count for some of the observed effect.

    • Very interesting results – Google does love root domains and they do pull together what the site is about. I assume your keywords are related too. I think Robert’s explanation is bang on too.

  9. Thanks for an interesting and fresh take on this issue. I have noticed something similar with my homepage. So, this is a good approach for quick listing and ranking results. Do you know if the same happens in Yahoo and Bing?

  10. Thanks for this. I’m just considering a domain name for my product. It’s given me food for thought.

  11. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the heads up. I knew I should optimise each post or even page for a single keywork but although I know about having a keyword name domain, I most times dont do it to leave myself flexible in case i need to repurpose the domain after analytics indicate another keyword is driving more traffic etc

I’ll sure try this out with the NBI packs and see how it works only I’ll get a keyword specific domains for the niche pack :) I havent had time to even build one blog as yet :(

As for PnP competetion, I am not worried about 499 other competitors. These are a lot fewer than those I currently compete with in any niche site I’ve ever set up. I’ll just promote more than the top guy :) I bet demand out strips supply if you know what you’re doing. If I analyse and realise one has 100 links, I’ll build more than those paying attenting to the follow tags and PRs of course.

I look forward to PnP & hope I can get in :p

  12. Very interesting post and I have experienced the same phenomena when carrying out research on article bios. I alwayd find in ezinearticles when first pushing a site and using the http://mysite.com link that the root domain always outranks the keyword anchor text links for a couple of weeks.

  13. Sure am excited to be a part of this [PnP]! I’ve watched a couple of the vids 3 or 4 times! :)

Just hope the cost won’t be to out of range…

Thanks for all your SOLID info you give!

    Cheers!

    Andrew, one more question.

Are those niches in PnP hand picked by you?
Or did you outsource the research?

If so, are the data reliable?
    Are they buying keywords?

Hope you can address these questions too.

    Thanks

  15. Hi Andrew,

I’ve always targeted a main keyword for my blog homepage. A rather competitive keyword I would say.

The reason for targeting that competitive keyword is because of the high search volume and of course, it’s highly relevant to my blog.

So far I’m hovering between the first and second page of Google’s SERP. It’s number 11 as I type this.

    Best!
    Welly Mulia

  16. Andrew, You have highlighted why it is important to put your conversion device above the fold on the homepage….

  17. Andrew, I can’t locate at all any buy button from the PnP website. How can I make the purchase?

  18. Hey Andrew,

I have to tell you, the PNP system is on point. You have made things so easy for anyone who have some level of knowledge pertaining online marketing. The videos are the bomb!! The products are very profitable and thanks for all the other things that you have jammed packed this system with. I you can actually get to the front page, if you know a little SEO.

  19. Excellent excellent results mate! PNP – must remember that.
