When List Building Is A No No?

I’m not sure if there’s a scenario for an absolute no no on list building, but I’m about to talk about a situation where the conventional wisdom on building an email list needs to be questioned.

I like the way Chris talked about this in one of his recent reports.

Basically, there are certain niches where it is advantageous to build an email list, and there are some niches where it is not…

For example, some groups of people that you will target online, are those that are looking for a singular solution to a one off problem. They want that solution and once they have it, that’s it – they don’t need anything else from you.

Like Chris mentions, in these niches, you make money from high traffic volume and a large number of low value sales.

In this kind of niche, list building is of little value.

If you’re targeting people who want to remove warts, and you’re promoting a wart removal ebook or supplement cure… for what purpose will you gather their email? What are you going to send them via email that’s going to be more valuable to them than sending them STRAIGHT to the wart removal cure sales letter right from the start?

You know what I mean?

The best thing you can do is these niches is get that visitor to your merchant’s sales letter asap – remember the discussion we had earlier in the year about slipperiness? This is where you want to get slippery!

You don’t need a relationship with people in this niche you just have to be the messenger – and the best, most efficient messenger you can be.

The opposite to this kind of niche is the kind where the solution people are looking for is an ongoing process rather than a one off cure. The online marketing niche is the perfect example – hence why the conventional wisdom, taught by people who market to this niche (more often than other niches) is to build a list.

For people like you and I who are into internet marketing, you can never have too much information! There’s always something to learn, always some news to hear about, always something you need to know but you don’t. Not only that but our industry is so quickly changing so even when you DO know alot, you always need to keep taking in the new info.

In this kind of niche, you’re silly if you’re NOT building a list.

Niches like golf, stock trading, learning a language, training a dog, anything that’s an ONGOING process.

This is where slipperiness goes out the door and stickiness is the name of the game. You want people to stay on your site as long as they can, you want them to get to know you, like you, think of you as an expert, trust you, and eventually buy from you, not just once, but time and time again.

So which of these niches is best to target?

I don’t think there’s a correct answer there. You can make a boatload of cash in either kind of niche, provided you take the understandings of this post into consideration from the get go.

  1. Thanks Andrew. It’s something I’ve thought about also.

Sometimes, I just wrack my brain trying to think about what I could offer a particular list.

You’re right. Don’t bother. Sell them the product and move on.

  2. Thanks Andrew!

It’s very intersting point of view.
May be autoresponder will be better for some niches than subscribe for regular e-mail.
