In this post I’m going to share with you a tip that will give your new site an advantage in the search engines before you even put it up.
If you’re thinking, you’ve probably worked out that there’s only one thing it can be…
It’s something that I haven’t talked about for so long, used to do alot but haven’t done for so long, but after finding the service I’m going to tell you about today, I’m going to be doing forever henceforth with my own niche blogs.
If you haven’t guessed, I’m talking about buying expired domain names to build on, rather than new ones.
What’s the benefit of building a blog on an old rather than new domain name?
1. You get a domain that is already indexed: Who doesn’t want that? Just means less work for you to do.
2. You get a domain with Age: One of the biggest influencing factors in search rankings. If you’re looking for SEO traffic to your site, this is a BIG advantage.
3. You can get a domain with existing PR, or even existing traffic in certain cases! Advantage for obvious reasons.
One of the reasons I stopped using expired domains (this was some 3 years ago now!) was because I got frustrated at the tools available at the time for digging them up (the ones I knew of anyway) and it became too much effort to get a good one that fit what I wanted.
Because that was always a question I asked too… Would I rather build on a domain that’s nice and aged but didn’t have keyword relevance to my niche… or one that was new, with no age but was keyword relevant?
Well of course, lots of new services have come out since then, with better search features, more domain listings, and best of all… FREE!
Oh… AND… you can far more easily find domains that DO have keyword relevance AND are aged – that’s a done deal for me.
I met a guy at the UG5 event in Feb called Jonathan Mizel, who just last week introduced me to a KILLER free service for finding thousands of great aged domains that you can snap up for… *drumroll*…
LESS than the price of a normal domain registration! Yes, it’s ridiculous!
The site is called FreshDrop.net – check it out
The listings are in order of how quickly they expire, but the best thing to use is the tab on the right to do a filtered search.
Here you can pull up domains only of a certain age, and only .com or .org (or whatever you want) AND containing the keyword that you want!
On the panel on the right, you use “Domain Extension Top” to select the desired top level domain extension…
Use the “Domain Criteria” panel to select your minimum age of domain…
And “Domain name include” to choose the keyword you want it to contain.
A word on keywords is to be a bit liberal with it. If you’re making a site on Dog Training, you may not find many domains containing the exact phrase “dog training” but you’ll find plenty with “dog” in it that, combined with a good age, will surely give you the authority and rankings boost you’re looking for.
After you click buy, you get taken to the domain auction page, most of which seem to be happening at godaddy.com – so you’ll need an account there if you don’t have one already. You can click to buy now at the auction and usually get the cheap price – $5-10!
If you can, just make sure to add whois protection to your order too, always important
That’s about all there is to it. Now you can get a domain that will be indexed before you even start, have authority before you even start, and be primed and ready to bring you the rankings and traffic you’re lookin for!
Happy domain hunting.

This is an awesome tip, I’ve started using it myself a couple months back. It’s nice to see other people using Freshdrop too. I use Freshdrop for a few other pretty tricky things. But I don’t want to post it on your blog cause I want them to stay tricky! I might be willing to share in a Twitter PM…
Ahh Domaining my favourite Topic.
Freshdrop.net is only the tip of the iceberg.
Two Caveats
Once the domain is dropped Google does delist it from it’s searches.
Also watch out for hacked websites that when on the domain can be time consuming to get removed from blacklist.
Fascinating Ant tips for what is best to look for to avoid future problems? I just got done “replacing” a couple domains that were previously banned. Not much fun.
Also, what happens to existing indexed pages after you take over? Would it be best to try to recover those if possible? Or, just redirect every old link to some new page?
Btw, sorry for any typos. I just had surgery and am stuck with one arm for a bit
That’s a great find, thanks Andrew.
I just picked up an 8 year old domain the other day. It includes the word review, so I’m hoping it will work well for product reviews with the product name as a sub domain.
NICE Glenn – let me know how it works out!
