Is Multi Tasking Killing Your Brain?

Some prominent time management experts believe so!

I’ve been following the launch of a program called Wake Up Productive and I was listening to an audio interview a week or so back where they talked about a statistic that just blew my mind…

According to some study, the details of which I don’t have available…

Quoted originally on Tim Ferris’ blog, the act of multi tasking – trying to get multiple tasks done at the same time, while switching your focus back and forth between the tasks until their complete actually LOWERS your IQ…

In fact the exact quote from this guy, who saw it on Tim Ferris’ blog stated that Multi Tasking was shown to have a MORE dramatic effect on your IQ than SMOKING POT!

Can you believe it? At first I was shocked, but when I thought about it (with what limited brain power I had left because I multi task so much), it made a LOT of sense.

I’m no psychology professor but I can imagine that your level of intelligence is surely contributed to by the ability of your mind to focus as much of it’s resources as possible on a single task, problem, idea, etc

Being in the habit of multi tasking couldn’t possibly help your brain to develop or maintain this ability!

It’s actually got me pretty scared, because I am often SO erratic with my work habits. I’m answering an email one minute, writing a blog post the next minute, talking to our coders the next minute – and I can spend days like that and not even realize.

The take away from this post is to spend as much of your work time as possible by focusing on ONE task at a time until it’s completed. Shut yourself off from all other distractions, emails, browser windows and people until the task you’re committed to is complete.

Now only will it make you get more done in the day, it’ll now make you SMARTER as well!
