IISFS Experiment Part 3: First Content

I’m getting pretty DARN frustrated that it’s taking so long to get approved for an affiliate program.

I’ve now applied to four affiliate programs for the same product, and yet not one of them has approved me – WHY?!

Anyway, for the sake of keeping the experiment exciting I’m forging ahead and today I put up my first bits of content…

Here’s the stuff I did.

1. I picked out two of the product names that had the lowest competitors and got decent search volume. One got 50 searches a day and had only 2 competing pages in Google! (searched in quotes of course) and the other I think was 90 searches a day and had about 5000 competing pages.

2. I made two blog posts containing the articles I’d had written on these two product names.

I did it in something of a specific way which is worth noting.

First, like I mentioned last time, I set my permalink structure to /%category%/%postname%/

So my product name was for example BRAND Pencil.

I made the category called BRAND and the post called Brand Pencil

So my url is www.pencilspencils.com/brand/brand-pencil

Imagine how dark blue that URL is gonna look in the Google search results for the term Brand Pencil – BEAUTIFULLY optimized :)

To give you more detail:

Each post was about 400 words.

I start the article with the main keyword, as though it’s the title of the article, which it is.

The keyword is in Bold through out the article – good on page SEO.

There’s no particular keyword density though in both cases my product name is mentioned about 5 times over the course of the article.

AND, in both posts, I used All In One SEO – to make the Title, Keywords, And Description of my page all the same – Brand Pencil – all just the keyword.

I’d probably recommend adding a little spice to the description if your blog is for the long term but in my experience, the above works fine.

And that’s about it.

I don’t even have an aff link up yet because I don’t have one – but like I mentioned I’ve got one 120×600 Adsense block in the sidebar.

So now my little blog has three posts (welcome and two product posts) and is getting ready to rock!

Hopefully the next time you hear from me there’ll be some affiliate program action occurring.

As soon as that gets approved I’ll be starting my Adwords campaigns to see which of these products is gonna convert.

After that I’ll go about continuing to promote the appropriate products with free traffic methods.

Keep checking back for updates!

Oh and BTW, if there’s anything unclear about what I did here, or you want clarification on something – let me know!

  1. Simple siloing? I’ve discovered an interesting trick. I’m not 100% certain of the implications, but here goes…

In the permalinks options, if you specify your category base as /. it will remove that annoying “category” from the category page. So in your case the top page is http://www.pencilspencils.com/, the category page would be http://www.pencilspencils.com/brand/ and the posts like http://www.pencilspencils.com/brand/brand-pencil would be indexed just like in a “normal” website design.

Of course, you’d have to be very careful to not to create a page named brand, or a sub-category named brand-pencil, or you’d likely be screwed :)

Like I said, I’m not entirely sure of the implications so use this trick at your own risk. (In other words, without the proper planning and management, you could easily break your blog). But, it’s interesting nonetheless.
