If I Started Niche Marketing From Scratch

It gets asked alot:

“If you started niche marketing from scratch, knowing everything that you know now, what would you do differently?”

And it’s something I think about alot.

If I was making my first niche site again, knowing what I know now – how would I go about it?

Well, for the benefit of all of my readers, and for my own curiosity, over the next few months, I’m going to do just that, and share all the results with you!

As some of you know, most of my niche marketing is outsourced at this point but I thought for old times sake, and for all of your sake I’ll go right back to square 1, just to see if I can do it.

I won’t be as fast as most of you could be, since I’ll be trying to fit it into the rest of my schedule.

I will be outsourcing certain tasks but I’ll be sure to report what they were and how much I spent.

It should be an interesting experiment, and I’m fully prepared to share the results good or bad.

I’ll walk you through each decision that I make in the niche marketing process, we’ll discuss what I did and why, and you’ll be free to ask questions, and make suggestions.

I’m hoping it’s something we’ll all learn a lot from.

We’ll call it the IISFS Experiment, so whenever you see that in a blog post title, or an email title, you’ll know what I’m talking about.

If you’re interested, I encourage you to follow along, try to beat my results, share your results on the blog here, and generally join in the fun!

You’ll see my first post in a day or so’s time and we’ll get cracking from there..

P.S. I’ll put all the posts for this experiment in a category called IISFS so you can locate to it easily on the when you need to see the latest update :)

  1. Rock on! can’t wait to follow up!

  2. Part 1 comin tomorrow :)

  3. I’ve been wondering if you might do something like this. As someone who is new to affiliate marketing I’m looking forward to observing a real-life example in the making. Fantastic! Thanks a bundle!

Will you be showing us the URL of your website as well? This will be great! :)

  5. Alex,

No URL unfortunately. But I’ll be telling you exactly what I’m doing with the site, giving you examples of the “kind” of product’s I’m promoting etc

Bad things can happen when you share the URL – did you hear what happened to Brad Fallon’s famous wedding favors site?

Anyway, it should be a great experiment and I can’t wait to share it with you guys.

    Andrew

I am unaware of the wedding favors’ site. Kind to share what has happened?

I am into niche marketing too. Earning some bucks, but I wish to “push” it to the next level and scale it up. Your experiment will come in handy… :)

  7. Alex,

Well he started saying on all these videos how he made all this money and got great search engine rankings for this one particular site, and Google delisted all his pages.

It was rumored that he made $16 mill a year with the site, alot of which was from SE traffic, and then it was gone like that.

    Craaazy stuff.

    Andrew

  8. Hi Andrew,

That is a very nice idea you have going. I was planning to do the same for a new website that I will be converting and a new website that I am starting from scratch.

The concept is sound, I will follow along and see what Ideas we have similar.

Bring it on, I am game, I love when marketers step back, and put on those “newbie” shoes.

  9. Great idea, I’m looking forward to reading the updates.

I also heard about Brad’s wedding favor site. Sad stuff!

    LD

  10. I wasn’t making 16 mill, but I did just get a WP blog shut down for some stuff (and they will de-index you ), and I’m having to restart a lot of stuff. I will be curious to find out your budget for this project and just how much you are outsourcing. Most people starting in this business don’t have funds for the extra frills.

  11. Hey Jill,

I will be spending a little money but I’m going to try minimize costs as much as possible.

More importantly I’ll be very candid about how much is spent in the process so that you know all the details :)

    I’m getting excited!

    Andrew

  12. I agree with Jill. It would be better if you included the budget and perhaps timeline for this project.

I’m looking forward to your updates

  13. hey Andrew,

this is something I was hoping that experienced marketers will do cos it is important to also the follow the though process and decisions made.

Can’t wait for you to start ;)

  14. I’m interested. This sounds like a very good idea. We get to follow you and try to do it ourselves. Looking forward to the guidance.

    Thanks,

    Lonnie

  15. Ditto,

So you’d want me to stick to a certain budget and within a certain time frame?

The only issue I have with it is time – I’m busy at the moment with the Firepow launch so I can’t commit 100% energy to just this task as I’m sure you can understand – but I believe that if you get all the information about what I’m spending and how long everything’s taking, you’ll get a realistic account of the whole process.

I also don’t like the time line idea on principle – some niche sites are going to take longer to profit than others, and it’s precisely the idea that you should be able to make X amount of money online in X amount of time that is the reason for so many people’s frustration – its a bad idea to propagate.

    Andrew

  16. Thanks for doing this, Andrew. I’m trudging along at a snail’s pace putting my PnP site together, but I AM doing it. This will surely boost my progress. You’re a gem!

  17. Hi Andrew, it will be great if you can detail every step of the way from doing the niche market research, keyword research, blog setup, driving traffic and monetizing it. It will be an interesting read.

I guess setting a target income to achieve will be great.

Budget wise, I guess there should not be any restriction as that can be self-limiting.

  18. Great idea! I’m now setting up a blog to build a list of people interested in network marketing, hopefully eventually sponsoring some of them in my favorite business opp. and generate some affiliate revenue from related books, marketing systems, etc., so I’ll be eagerly looking for your posts.

  19. Hi Andrew
I LOVE the idea. I think I would like to add the rss feed to my own blog.
It’s a blog which bashes some gurus and praisese the good ones.
An honest opinion by me as a marketer. (I know I doesn’t earn any credits…)

With your permission Andrew, I would like to add it to
    http://internet-marketology.com/marketology

I will not add without your yes!
Look forward to your detailed steps…

  20. Is this the answer to all our dreams?
I really like what I am reading here,
The truth is out there! except usually you have to pay through the nose for it.
    This is cool stuff!!

  21. Wow a great idea, can’t wait to follow along.
I will be interested to see just what your budget will be?
    Thank you

  22. Hi Andrew,
I am really happy to hear that you are going to be showing us how you start from scratch with niche marketing. I’m still climbing uphill trying to get this to work. Thanks so much, you are always sharing such helpful information. :)

    Hi Andrew,
I very interested to see how you do with your new “project” I alway seem to veer back to your sites to get good free info. I have my own site finaly up and running after lots of procrastination and worrying as to wether I had enough information and skills to hand. The system that I used to get me up and runing was one of your very own easy to follow programmes (Plug and Play) At the moment it’s on page one for my main keyword, normaly positions 3 to 6, but as yet I haven’t earnt a red cent in affiliate commision so I will be very interested to see where I’m going wrong.

    Yours sincerely
    Paul Hamilton

  25. I’m in… sounds like an interesting journey.

I think that with your experience and starting from day one it will be a stream lined education for me (us).

    So…. I am in

  26. Actually, if you are doing it “part-time”, that would probably reflect what the majority of us are doing. I would enjoy doing this stuff full-time, but I have another job I really do like (and is fortunately in the same “pond” as IM). So, for me, part-time is probably what I’ll be doing for some time to come.

  27. O yesss!! I appreciate so much your idea and I hardly wait to see it all, step by step. For many of us this will be great help.
    Sasha

  28. Great idea Andrew.

I think one of the problems beginners have in learning this stuff is not seeing how it is done.!

I understand you not wanting to reveal the URL. The site will likely be cloned or at least copied / imitated if you do.

But some of the real power of the teaching will be lost though if you don’t share the URL!

You mentioned the wedding site Andrew -as far as I recall the story – Brad Fallon was said to have bought links to promote the site you mention and who knows what else was done? Google do not penalise websites for being famous – just for violating the Terms of Service.

It will be fun anyway to follow along with the progress of the site!

    All The Best

    Alex Newell

  29. Hi Andrew

I have purchased several of your products and found them to be absolutely top notch. I got more than my money’s worth from them.

Because of that, I trust your advice and I’m always interested in what you’re up to. I do believe you’re outdoing yourself this time. I appreciate the work that will go into this freebie. You’ve just raised the concept of relationship marketing to a whole new level. Thanks, buddy!

The only argument I have is to agree with those who think it would be more educational to share the url. It would probably save you a lot of writing, too. A picture is worth a thousand words and all that.

I agree with the poster who said Brad must have violated the Google TOS to get deindexed. Heck, if you feel like it, why not go to Matt Cutts’ blog and ask him if he thinks there would be a problem.

    All the best,
    Sally

  30. Love the idea.

Jon’s case study on his site some time back was excellent.

I myself am running a mini-case study on my blog, and have revealed the URL.. *Shudders*

Oh well, it’s just a small site I set up in 30 minutes, so I guess it wouldn’t hurt that much.

Looking forward to the first part!

  31. Hmm,

I’ll keep thinking about the URL sharing idea… if as we go on, my explanations don’t seem to be sufficient and we can all see that it’s hurting the educational effect of the experiment we’ll make a new decision.

I appreciate your feedback and hope you’ll continue to share it :)

    Andrew

  32. Not sure how you do it all! But keep the good stuff coming. Looking forward to your updates on this project and taking us behind the curtains once again.

  33. Alex Yeo said on

    Heya Andrew,

After reading your “niche selection” post, I feel that if you share your URL, you can cut down a lot of writing.

Just a suggestion, if you don’t wish to reveal a “gold mine” niche, you can go for a common niche such as weight loss, golf, acne etc and show us how you gonna start from scratch. I suppose for such common niches, sharing the URL would be “safe”.

You don’t have to keep explaining and using analogy for later entries. :D

  34. Hey I for one would really enjoy and certainly appreciate watching you in action.
    thanks for offering the opportunity
    Nick

  35. I´ll be monitoring closely ;-)

  36. Just FYI Andrew, I’m going to play along. I’ve selected a good product “group” I’d like to promote (steady sales, some competition but not too much). The group has several affiliates I can choose from with a nice range of prices. As soon as you get going, so will I. I plan to essentially follow your lead, but as I inevitably do, will add my own personal “spin” to the process. I think it will be great fun and hopefully enlightening.

  37. Andrew good idea. I can follow along with you. I’ve been thinking about a couple of new projects.

  38. Andrew Awesome Idea! You have been cranking those Ideas out lately. Keep up the great work!

I just purchased your 50,000 niche book, and Pay Pal didn’t send me back to download it. Could you send me the link? Thanks!

  39. Hey Andrew that’s a terrific idea. I am sure you will help out an awful lot of people by doing this.
Well done and I wish you great success with it.
It’s a shame you can’t share the url and niche but it makes sense that you don’t. Maybe when you have achieved success with it you will be able to.

  1. [...] Don’t believe me or my guru friend it happened to Brad Fallon. Here is a site I think you will enjoy reading I do.. but the topic is about a Andrew Hansen promoting a new niche blog and you need to read the comments about what has happened to some people including Brad Fallon when they mention their website in relation to getting more and more traffic and how they are doing and how they are making money from it. Here’s the post —> If I Started Niche Marketing From Scratch [...]
