The Fuss About Affiliate Data Feeds

Amidst my holiday in the Northern Hemisphere, I’ve had my attention brought to a product called the 10 day cash secret – which I’m sure some of you saw.

Also, I’ve had people referring to this ‘technology’ of pulling affiliate datafeeds onto their blogs, on the Firepow blog, suggesting it as a plugin we should create….

If you didn’t happen to see it, the premise is that a data feed gets created out of products from an affiliate network like Amazon.com. For example, one piece of information could be the name, description, price and a picture of a particular product on Amazon. A feed might be created of all the products in the gardening category for example, and these scripts take the data of all those products and make them into an RSS feed, slot the feed onto your blog and you get a post made with the information about a new product every X amount of time that you specify.

If you had no idea such a thing can happen, you’re probably surprised and excited but don’t worry, it’s nothing to wet your pants about.

Firstly, this technique (ala RSStoblog) has been in use for a long time, years in fact, and despite it’s reemergence into mainstream under the cloak of a different name, it’s still the same thing – and it’s effectiveness is on the decline, if not, already at the bottom.

So this post is firstly, a warning not to bother with the said product, 10 day cash secret (an alluring title indeed).

Secondly, it’s a warning about this technique in general.

Yes, it can be great to get content onto your blog without alot of effort, and even more convenient when the content gets your affiliate link for certain products automatically slotted into it…

But search engines are too smart for this – they pick up on same interval repeat posting, they pick up on content that’s not unique (I couldn’t understand why the sales pages for these products were saying the words UNIQUE content…), and they pick up on the whole process being unnatural.

In fact it was pointed out in certain forum threads that even the example site used in the sales letter of this product had now been given the boot from the search engines.

Anyway, I hope this post made it’s point. Keep your focus on quality content and natural SEO and you will prevail in the end.

  1. Plus, check out the sales letter where everyone is just so stuck on the $3k odd sales whereas the commission he earned for that month was only around $70!!!

he kept everybody focused on the SALES while no one was concerned how much he actually EARNED from that site!

    saaad… lol

  2. Thanks Andrew I really appreciate it when somone like you who is “in the know” about these products lets us know when NOT to buy. And thank you Abi for pointing out that although sales were high, commissions were pretty low. I’ll definitely NOT be buying this product.

  3. The site I used as an example hasn’t been “booted from the search engines” but has actually carried on making sales in March. I never say on my sales page that the datafeeds are “unique” content although I do refer to a datafeed as “semi exclusive content” if very few other people are using that feed. And, yes, I mention the sales figure of $4,000 but I don’t misrepresent that figure as commissions.

  4. Hey Neil,

Thanks for commenting mate. And please don’t think I was intending to pick on your product specifically, as I was alerted to a number of products of this nature before making this post.

To clarify further, I don’t discredit this product for what it is called “10 day cash secret” because as myself and others I’m sure will attest, it can be a viable method of generating fast cash. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ll agree that as a viable long term business model, it has its flaws.

My apologies for misquoting that the site had been removed from the search engines, I took someone else’s word for that without checking.

    All the best,
    Andrew

  5. I sure hope it works I bought it a few days ago!

I did not realise it was RSS to Blog but for sure data feeds are not new. Mostly I think it has been the preserve of techies and merchants.

What Neil seems to have done is to make the tech stuff easy. I have watched the videos and my next step is to find a feed that I want to use – tomorrow I hope.

It’s 3 march so if 10 day cash is real I’ll be able to check in and tell ya in 10 days time!

    Alex
